🌌 Ever Known the Mystic Lahaul Valley? The Land of Dakinis, Baralacha & Shinkula Pass, and Hidden Himalayan Lakes
Have you ever felt that quiet pull — the kind that whispers there’s more to life than deadlines, traffic, and city lights?
That’s the pull that brought me here, five years ago, to the wild, raw, untamed valleys of Lahaul.
I came as a solo traveler, hungry for space to breathe, for skies that stretched wider, for mountains that didn’t care who I was — they just stood there, ancient and silent, holding stories older than memory.
And I stayed.
Now, I run Flugafen B&B, a small homestay tucked in the apple orchards of Manali, where travelers from around the world arrive seeking what I once sought: a pause, a reset, a connection back to something real.
But here’s the truth I tell all my guests — the real magic begins when you cross over Manali into Lahaul:
A valley once called the Land of Dakinis, home to sky dancers and spirits, where high-altitude passes like Baralacha La and Shinkula slice through the Himalayas, and where hidden turquoise lakes like Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal shimmer like jewels between the mountains.
This isn’t just a road trip — it’s a journey into another world.
Let me show you how to do it right.
🛏 Day 1–2: Rest, Acclimatize, and Find Your Center in Manali
Start your adventure by slowing down first.
Settle into Manali, but skip the tourist traps. Stay at our peaceful Flugafen B&B, surrounded by orchards, where each room carries the soul of a different country — Paris, Bali, Norway, Vienna, Tibet — because travel is a feeling, not just a place.
👉 What to explore:
Walk the quiet lanes of Prini and Shuru villages, where time seems to stand still.
Visit the sacred Arjun Gufa cave and listen to the wind whispering old legends.
Sit by secret waterfalls like Sajla, away from the crowds, and let the cold mist hit your skin.
Taste local Himachali dishes like siddu and sepu vadi, recipes passed down through grandmothers.
End your days at Naggar Castle or Roerich Art Gallery, where the fading sunlight paints the valley gold.
🚗 Day 3–5: Into the Mystic — Crossing Into Lahaul Valley
When you’re ready, when your body has adjusted to the altitude and your heart has softened to the mountains, it’s time to go deeper.
I’ll help you chart a route that’s more than just a checklist — it’s a path into one of the Himalayas’ most mysterious, soulful landscapes. For rest of your days stay in a very beautiful Dragon Heritage home -Kyelang Times Stays right in the middle of Keylong village.
🌄 Day 3: Manali ➔ Keylong (via Atal Tunnel)
Watch as the lush green Kullu valley gives way to the stark, brown slopes of Lahaul, like stepping through a hidden doorway.
Stop at Sissu, listen to the waterfall’s roar, and watch locals tending to their fields.
Reach Keylong, the quiet beating heart of Lahaul, and rest.
🏔 Day 4: Conquer Shinkula Pass
Drive toward Shinkula Pass, a wild, rarely visited route touching the edge of Zanskar.
Feel the thrill of high-altitude travel — the thin air, the biting wind, the endless sky.
🏕 Day 5: Lakes of the Gods — Deepak Tal & Suraj Tal ➔ Baralacha La
Visit Deepak Tal, a still, blue mirror surrounded by mountains.
Go further to Suraj Tal, the sacred source of the Bhaga River, sitting under the shadow of Baralacha La — a place so high, so stark, it feels like standing at the edge of the world.
💬 Why I Share This With You
Because when I first came here, I didn’t just find mountains.
I found pieces of myself I had long forgotten.
I want you to feel what I felt:
The quiet thrill of sitting by an unnamed stream, the heart-stopping beauty of a snow-covered pass, the peace that settles into your bones when you realize you don’t need to be anywhere else.
If you stay at Flugafen B&B, I’m happy to help you design a route, share secret stops, connect you to local drivers, and maybe — just maybe — help you fall in love with these mountains the way I did.
